The Fusiliers to Return to London!

We, the recreated 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fusiliers), have been invited to return home and parade at the Tower of London. The date fixed for this historic occasion is summer of 2010, the 325th anniversary of the founding of the regiment. The exact date is still being settled, and travel arrangements and the itinerary will be made soon after.

We plan a gallant display of brave soldiery led by stirring fife and drum musick from our skilled field musicians. The Regimental Colour and King’s Colour will be proudly flown as we parade through the streets and into the courtyard of this famous - and sometimes infamous - fortress.

In 1685, nine infantry regiments were raised to help quell the rebellion led by James Scott (1st Duke of Monmouth), the illegitimate son of the recently-deceased Charles II. Raised at the Tower of London by Lord Dartmouth, and designated a corps d’elite by King James II, they were referred as “Our Royal Regiment of Fuzileers”. Unlike other English regiments of the day, many of whose troops carried pikes, all the troops in the Fuzileers carried muskets, or “fusils”.

The Tower of London continues to serve as Regimental Headquarters for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and houses officers’ apartments, the Fusiliers Museum, and the Crown Jewels of the Royal Family.
